Paid Family Leave Program (PFL)

Workers who contribute to the California State Disability Insurance (SDI) Program are entitled to take leave from work under the Paid Family Leave Program (PFL) for the following reasons:

  • to treat their own serious illness
  • to bond with a new born baby
  • to bond with an adopted or foster child
  • to care for an immediate family member (parent, spouse, child or a registered partner) during their serious illness

Under the PFL program, eligible workers are entitled to six weeks of partial pay leave in a year, which can be taken consecutively or intermittently on an hourly, daily or weekly basis as needed. PFL benefits are calculated on the basis of earnings in the base period, among other factors.
